What a Young Husband Ought to Know Classic Reprint Sylvanus Stall 9781332820603 Books

This very earnest collection of advice for young husbands abound with insights into the period's morality, culture, and perspectives on gender roles, sex, children, marriage, religion, family life, and civic duty. It is clear that all of these are inextricably intertwined in the author's perspective, and if any one of these institutions should fall, it would be the destruction of all of them.

Of course, the fact that these advice books exist is evidence that the culture of the time did not live up to the espoused (sorry) ideals, but the earnest sincerity of the book shows how important they were intended to be. The author assumes that the reader is a devout Christian without the least question, and also, as such advice books usually were, the audience is also assumed to be an educated member of the middle class.

A few parts of the book actually surprised me. The discussion of male and female anatomy is quite scientific (he even notes that male and female genitals are more similar than they appear at first glance), although like today's evolutionary psychologists, the author reads a great deal of psychological differences into the physical differences. For example, because the ova moves very little during the fertilization process, but sperm are very active and race to the goal, and this is reflected in woman's passive and tranquil nature and man's active and seeking nature. (Now you know.) He also goes to some lengths to explain that neither sex is morally or intellectually superior, though he carefully rations out aspects of morality by gender.

Overall, a fascinating book to dip into and very easily skimmed.

What a Young Husband Ought to Know Classic Reprint Sylvanus Stall 9781332820603 Books Reviews

Old book of advice to new husbands on getting along with their wives.

I picked up this book free during an giveaway. Although fully as preachy as I expected, I was surprised that it wasn't all too horrible for words. Yes, there was absurd "information" such as "The nervous system of woman is more refined and more delicate than that in men," but there was also a recognition that "neither is superior to the other." Still, statements such as men are more capable of logical thought left me uninterested in reading further. I didn't make it to the 10% mark before giving up.
