I haven't completely read the book as yet . I'm saving it for when winter sets in here in Mich . I liked Book One so well that I had to purchase this one along with Volume Three . I'll update after I have finished reading .I now finished Claus Book 2 ,The Woman
As Elizabeth struggles with the loss of Rebecca and would she still become a Claussen ,Mary who is like a big sister ,and her new husband agrees to take Elizabeth into their home to bring her comfort as Christopher decides to leave for for the China coast while he griefs over his loss .Mary has Elizabeth home schooled and earns a teacher certificate. C. Claus returns for a short time but then leaves for the West for a long period of time looking for new opportunities .Liz misses him so much that she leaves Boston and heads West in search of him . Along the way she sees many new cities and makes many new friends who she always wants to help however she can .
Many hours of research was needed in the writing of these books as there is a lot of history, geography and boat building that is included in each story , which also includes slavery and their problems , Indian tribes being chased from their land . ,river and canal travel . All making for an interesting book for myself .
I know have the complete set of 5 books of Claus so I can now follow the story to the end .. I'll now have to look into this authors other books.

You will meet so many new people, and lots of adventure and danger along the way, from Indians, to runaway slaves. This book is sure to keep your interest from beginning to end!
Now we move from Vol One the Child into Elizabeth's next stage in life. Vol Two will come in two halves. This first half is how she sets out from Boston to find Christopher Claussen. We go along and are treated to the history of the expansion of the United States. At each new stop, the cites are small towns just getting started ...Detroit, St. Louis. etc. The people Elizabeth meets who help her and that she helps come complete with histories and perfect local dialects. The adventure continues and Elizabeth, our centerpiece, takes us with her.
Highly recommended.
