The Beloved One The De Montforte Brothers Book 2 edition by Danelle Harmon Romance eBooks Reviews

Danelle Harmon's novel the Beloved One is in a word emotional. Brimming with intriguing characters and plenty of action this novel never stalls but moves along at a steady and fulfilling pace till its happily ever after conclusion.

Lord Charles de Montforte is an officer in the British Army serving in America. He is betrothed to a Boston woman who is expecting his child when he is injured in a skirmish between colonial militia and his regiment. Charles falls and hits his head and awakens in a vicar's home in a small town in Massachusetts. He is blind from his injuries.

Amy lives with her father and brother and sisters who are the epitome of self centeredness. Amy is drawn to Charles and she nurses him and spends her days in his company. Charles is growing dependent upon Amy and he is quick to jump to her defense when her sisters belittle her. Amy is almost like Cinderella in her home, feeling unworthy and definitely unappreciated, but Charles makes her feel wanted and accepted. Amy's father was a Native American and her sisters and even her step father allow their prejudice to color their view of her.

Charles and Amy connect emotionally right from the beginning and this only strengthens as they spend time together. Charles is despondent over his circumstances and when it appears he is abandoned by his family and fiancé he turns to Amy who is there to comfort him.

Charles knows he must return to England but he almost dreads doing so. He feels he has disappointed his family and worse he has lost his natural confidence and decisiveness. Charles is known throughout the estate and village as the Beloved One and he feels he can never measure up to his former self. Charles is a perfectionist and he feels unworthy in so many ways.

Amy is looking for a better life and begs Charles to allow her to accompany him to England so she can learn to be a ladies' maid. He agrees but does not hold out hope for their future. He discovers his fiancé is in England with his family and Charles feels duty bound to marry her. Both Amy and Charles have many surprises waiting for them in England.

This couple has chemistry but even more than that, they are genuine and kind with each other. They don't hold back their frustrations and fears either. Both have suffered greatly. In many ways this book focuses more on Charles's feelings than Amy's. He has bouts of depression, self directed anger and frustration yet he still manages to find hope and rest when he is with Amy. Together this couple creates soft magical moments in the midst of harsh circumstances.
There are so many reviews here and you are either going to read it or not. I'll just say that this guy was supposed to be the beloved one who never put a foot wrong and lived up to family expectations. Fair enough people make mistakes but this guy just made one mistake after the next and as everyone else has said, his younger brother in 'The Wild One' had a far better character than him.

+++Spoilers+++
We know from book 1 that the H got his fiancee pregnant and then went missing. Her baby is born a bastard and his younger brother marries his fiancee to give the baby a name. In this book we discover that the H was badly injured (for a few weeks) and then got the h to write letters to his fiancee and family for him. Those letters weren't sent but realistically if he didn't receive a reply surely he'd write again? No logic and the time period was over 12 months. He knew his fiancee had to give birth and all the ramifications of that but he never thinks about that or the baby. Fair enough but then he goes and does the same thing again by sleeping with yet another innocent. This one he gives no promises. Honestly I hated him! You will already know that he thinks that his first child was a mistake so you know that this guy is truly a prince.
I'm so glad that I read this book before reading any of the reviews. I adored "The Wild One" and knew I had to continue since the first book ended on a cliffhanger.
Now that I've read it, I decided to check out what others thought of "The Beloved One". Those who didn't like it seemed to have an issue with Charles's reaction to his first birth child, Charlotte. Apparently they had expected a huge fatherly reaction. But what isn't understood is...he doesn't know this child. Yes she is his flesh and blood, but he had missed out on her entire life up until that point. They are strangers and she could very well be somebody else's child. And she pretty much is, being that his brother Gareth was raising her. Charlotte's reaction by bursting into tears was perfectly normal. So why wouldn't Charles's feeling of numbness and anxiety not be normal? It was an awkward situation. You can't fabricate fatherly affection, it's either there or it's not.
I thought it was a wonderfully written story and I am very much looking forward to the other books (particularly the wicked one lol)!
After the first book, I was questioning weather I would enjoy the second because of what appeared to be questionable ethics of our hero, the story was well written, and gave validation to where about's of our hero, that were raised in the first book, and proving one should never jump to conclusions, well written worth the read!
